Adventures Continued
I attended 1st and 2nd grades in Medford, OR. My parents learned after testing that I was dyslexic in all forms. Making sight reading very difficult for me to learn. They sent me to a private teacher who started teaching me to read using phoenix. My parents continued to teach me each summer of my grade school years to keep me up with my fellow classmates. I really learned to read around 4th grade and started to spell around 10th grade. Spelling continues to be an issue for me to this day. Thank goodness for spell check.
My 3rd grade year our family moved to Flint, MI for my dad to take his first teaching job. This only lasted 6 months. I was placed in a classroom where I was the only white kid. It was a major shock to me to experience prejudice against me because I was white. We moved at Christmas time to Beaumont, TX where it was the exact opposite. I learned real quick I don't like prejudice from any side of the coin. We spent a year and half in Beaumont, TX. I loved the little green tree frogs and Gardenia hedges around our home. I was introduced to anything that moves is most likely poisonous.
My dad moved us my 5th-7th grade years to Keene, TX. These were happy years filled with friends and sun. My mom went back to college and became a teacher also, while dad finished his masters in Education. Daddy ever the itchy feet decided to move us my 8th grade year to Coeur D' Alene, ID. WE spent a very cold year there in the beauty of the north west.
1979 at the beginning of my 9th grade year found us in Yakima, WA. This year is marked in my memories by the Mt St Helens erupting and spewing ash all over Yakima. Making school get out 2 weeks early with no final exams. My 10th grade year started out great. I got my drivers license around Dec 1st in the first snow of the year. Having never driven in snow it was a bit nerve racking. While working in wood working class (my dad is my teacher) on a wood project, my dad managed to cut the sides out of 3 of his remaining fingers. I got to drive him to the hospital where they had to remove the tip of one of the fingers. Life was never dull at our home.
Dad once again decided it was time to move across the USA to New Braintree, MA to teach at a boarding school for my final two years of high school. These were wonderful years spent working, school and dating the love of my life. Sorry to say the school closed down at the end of my Sr. year.
My parents once again decided to return to Keene, Texas where I could attend Nursing school. Andy decided to follow me since we had agreed with out parents not to get married until I finished nursing school. However, I only finished my first year, Andy and I broke up and I dropped out of college to work.
More about the next phase of my life another post.
