The Life of A Christmas Tree in our Home
The life of a Christmas tree in our home is a plotted and enjoyed event. We pick out our live Christmas tree the third week of October at a Christmas tree farm. This is the beginning of our Christmas trees life in the Coffee Mermaid's home.
Here our Christmas tree will look over the valley until the Saturday after Thanksgiving when it will be cut down for our pick up. In the mean time I had picked up pine cones the previous year and had dried them out to use on my tree as decorations with my hand blown crystal bulbs.
Step 1 : Dry out pine cones completely
Step 2: Put very small eye hooks in the base of the pine cone
Step 3: Tie clear fishing line on them to hang them from the tree with.
Step 4: Spray paint with metallic silver paint.
They are now ready for our trees arrival.
The day before we picked up our Christmas tree we had a snow and ice storm. Our was covered in ice. This made it fun to say the least. After bringing it home, cutting the bottom off and setting it up in the stand. It had to stand wrapped up for 4 hours with towels under it while it defrosted.
Time to decorate the tree has finally arrived. I like to be able to see my tree so don't use a whole lot of decorations.
The branches that are removed from the bottom of the tree are used to make a door wreath and fill ice skates to decorate with.
Our Christmas tree will grace our home until the Saturday after Christmas when it will go to it final stage of life in our home. It will be de-decorated, taken out side to the the back yard. It is placed in one corner of the yard to have bird and squirrel food put on through the rest of winter. In the spring it will travel to a compost pile.
This is the full cycle of a $40 Christmas tree in the Coffee Mermaid's home. We love the family event and the smell of the tree in our home. Next year maybe you can bring a little Christmas scent to your home and yard for a few months time.
