New Year Resolutions vs Goals

About 16 years ago, I join Pampered Chef as a sales person.  I enjoyed a 12 years of selling before I retired to spend my evening and weekends with my family.  During my time with PC, I attended many training classes on how to improve myself and my business.   My director, Patty had us each year make goals for our business and personal life.  This started the habit that lives with me each year.  I was also a foster parent for a time where they had us also learn to write our goals down each year.
Resolutions are things you wish you could change but just don't have the will power to do.  They are often broken within 1 day to a month.   They make us feel guilty very time the word resolution is spoken.   This leads to be dishonest with our selves and others as to how our resolutions are going.  We often forget these resolutions by June and never mentions them again until New Years Eve.  What was my resolutions for last year?  I really can't remember but I am sure I didn't do it.  This creates a pattern of failure in our lives that reinforces that we can't do it.
Goals on the other had are both short term and long term goals of things we want to accomplish or reach.  When I first started my goals I put that I wanted to get my BS degree.  It took 10 years for me to get there but I finally made it in 2005 I graduated with my BS in Horticulture Business. It was an awesome feeling to be able to remove that goal from my list.
I try to make 1-10 goals per year.  My goals will include personal, family, work and household goals.  Since, I  work from home it is easy to loose focus on life. Some years, I will reevaluate my goals and realize I need to remove them from my goal list for a few years until I am ready to face them .  This is not failure it is growth in my life that allows me to move forward in life.
Goals can be short term or long term.  I always try to put at least two goals a year I know I can do no problem.  They may be that I will drink coffee every day or I will eat chocolate as often as possible.  This may seem silly but there are times in my life when I need that positive thing to carry to the next year.
Once you have written your goals down, you will need to post them were you will see them every day.  I keep mine on the mirror over my dresser.  I have kept them on my office bulletin board at times also or the frig.
We include our kids in the goal writing activity.  They are still getting the hang of it and my husband of 2.5 years is learning to write his goals also.
I will share my goals form 2014 and my present goals for 2015.  This helps keep me accountable to working on my goals.
